Coaching is an activity wherein a coach, in a trusting, non-judgmental environment, leads a client – using an intentional process of questioning, listening, encouragement, and paraphrasing – to arrive at a conclusion or plan of action on an issue using knowledge, experience, and resources possessed by the client. For the most part, the coach extracts knowledge and behavior already possessed by the individual being coached.
Mentoring involves coaching but adds and element of teaching. Mentoring is an activity in which an experienced leader, in a trusting, non-judgmental environment, guides a less experienced individual through a process of learning both the technical knowledge and interpersonal behavior skills necessary to manage and lead people. The goal is to prepare individuals for increased leadership and management responsibilities.
These processes are particularly necessary in making family succession transitions successful. They emphasize both the technical and interpersonal leadership skills needed to assume the leadership of organizations.
